Interdisciplinary literature reviews fail when they treat each discipline's literature separately — summarizing what psychologists say, then what economists say, then what sociologists say — without building the integrative argument that reveals what these fields collectively understand. The value of crossing disciplines is discovering that different fields have independently arrived at related conclusions using different methods, strengthening confidence in the underlying mechanism, or that one field has solved a problem the other hasn't yet addressed.
