Overview
Foley and sound effects fail when they call attention to themselves — when a door close sounds too loud for the scene's acoustic environment, when footsteps are too perfectly in sync to feel natural, when library SFX are obviously library SFX because they've been used in 10,000 other productions. Effective sound effects are invisible: they support the reality of the scene without the viewer noticing the individual elements. The sound that is noticed is the sound that has failed at its primary job.
The Foley & Sound Effects Framework identifies which sounds require custom performance vs. library selection, builds the layering approach for complex sounds, and calibrates placement and levels for seamless integration with the scene's acoustic environment.
